Many primary school days begin with a handwriting activity. Teachers often have laminated sentence strips pre-printed with each child’s name. Students learn the multi-step routine of finding their names, tracing or writing with dry erase markers and then cleaning the cards.
But such a task is not appropriate for all learners. Those with low fine motor coordination may find this task excessively difficult or even painful. An easy accommodation for this lesson would be to offer magnetic letters on a cookie sheet as an alternative method for printing the name.
If fine motor skills are so low that it is difficult for students to manipulate the magnets, then the letters of names can be printed on the inside of 2 liter soda caps backed with the hook side of Velcro. The loop side of the Velcro can be attached in a strip onto small shoeboxes. Trash to the rescue once again!
